BIG thanks to more 1,600 community members who participated in the recent questionnaire about the diverse meaningful roles libraries play in community. The artwork for the forthcoming Canyon Branch Library was inspired by community responses. Artist Brad Goldberg's artwork Opening Minds, represents both the physical and digital world of the library, and the inclusive nature of its purpose.
The artwork Opening Minds will be made of granite sandblasted with words, interspersed with the 1's and 0's of binary code. As part of the artwork development process Artist Brad Goldberg and the Library System wants to hear from you!
In our diverse world, living in a diverse country, the breadth and depth of potential community contributions will strive to be inclusive and to represent social, cultural, and ethnic diversity and the vastness of human endeavor.
June was chosen for Pride Month to commemorate the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots, which took place in Greenwich Village, Manhattan in 1969. In the early hours of morning, police raided the Stonewall Inn, one of the last sanctuaries of the gay community. When a lesbian in police custody called onlookers to action, a grassroots movement sparked six days of uprising against the police treatment of the gay community. These riots are seen as the beginning of the Gay Rights Movement.
Juneteenth is a federal holiday celebrating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. The celebration originated in Galveston, Texas and is the anniversary date of when Union Army officials proclaimed freedom for enslaved people in Texas, which was the last Confederate state with institutional slavery. The day was recognized as a federal holiday on Jun 17, 2021, when President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law.
